Marine Adventure Program

Marine Adventure Program

The mission of this unique GNS program is to foster a love of marine adventure. MAP challenges students at all levels to develop marine skills, as well as their personal confidence and leadership abilities.

From Junior Kindergarten onward, our students are given many opportunities to explore the amazing coastline that lies right outside our doors. Older students are also given the chance to further enhance their skills by travelling to other Vancouver Island destinations, often on overnight excursions. The school offers a variety of programs:

  • Class outings during school days.
  • An afterschool co-curricular program in the Spring Term.
  • Day and overnight summer camps for students aged 11 through 17.

Update

Please be advised that due to the continued closure to overnight camping on Discovery Island, our Discovery Island Camps will now overnight on Portland Island in the Gulf Island National Park Reserve. Portland Island is located in protected waters approximately three nautical Miles from Swartz Bay. There is no change to the Monday and Tuesday schedule.

Drop-off and pick-up times and place will remain the same. Participants will be bused to and from the launch site at the government wharf next to Swartz Bay Ferry terminal. The bus will again be driven by camp leader and GNS staff member, Doug Tyrrell, who has a class 4 license. Please feel free to contact Doug Tyrrell at 250.370.6852 or dtyrrell@mygns.ca if you have any questions or concerns.

Our Discovery Camps are very full days that include paddling basics, wet exits and rescues, and a chance at a first try at your Eskimo roll. We’ll then take our new skills over to Discovery Island for a three-day camping adventure, complete with hikes, daily paddles, games, and great food.
