Beach Drive Learning Commons
At the heart of the Junior School lies the Library Learning Commons (LLC). It is located in the former living room and dining room of the historic Rattenbury House. In our LLC, old-world charm has been blended with new world resources to create a unique learning space for our students and school community.
More than a resource room, the LLC is an integral part of the educational team. It hosts special curriculum related events including the speakers for the Grade 5 Exhibition, Student Voice, visiting authors and other experiential learning opportunities.
The teacher-librarian, works together with classroom teachers to plan and provide instruction in information literacy, research, and reading and writing skills to individuals and groups of students. The joy of reading is promoted through DEAR (drop everything and read) time, story times, books talks, author visits and regular book borrowing. The LLC also serves as a resource for educational technology with student access to the laptop computers, the Internet and the multimedia collection.
The LLC is open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. daily as well as recess and lunch. All students have a weekly book exchange time. Teachers book additional time in the library to work with the students and librarian on inquiry and research.
