Junior School Principal

Glenlyon Norfolk School is seeking a charismatic, inspirational Junior School Principal who will provide vision and leadership to the Junior School campus and its 250 students.

About Glenlyon Norfolk School

Glenlyon Norfolk School (GNS) is a co-educational independent school in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. For more than a century, GNS has offered students from throughout Victoria and around the world a unique approach to education that promotes critical thinking, inquiry-based learning and development of intellect and empathy. With 150 dedicated faculty and staff and a broad program of academics, athletics, fine arts and service, GNS’s three IB programs (Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma) are distinct but fully integrated, with each of the Junior, Middle, and Senior Schools led by its own Principal.

At GNS, our 700 students are given the opportunity to differentiate themselves in many ways. Every student is recognized and supported as a unique individual. Each is responsible for their own actions and is challenged to continually embrace the core values of the school, which are designed to allow students to be the best they can be in every area of the school, and in life. These values include truth, courage, caring, individuality and community.
GNS is located on two campuses set approximately one kilometre apart in quiet, established, and desirable neighbourhoods. The Junior School, located on the only beachfront junior facility in Canada, is in the midst of a comprehensive renewal. In September 2020, we officially opened the new Main Building, and we are on target to complete the Junior School project in late 2021.
Like every school, the COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges for both students and teachers that could never have been imagined before the pandemic began. However, the school has been proactive in its response, working closely with the provincial Ministries of Health and Education to create and implement a comprehensive plan that has allowed for operations to resume at full capacity in September 2020. We are well-positioned to adapt to changes as the pandemic continues to evolve, and are confident in our ability to continue addressing future challenges as they arise.

The Opportunity

This once in a lifetime opportunity has arisen due to the retirement of a beloved and long-standing member of our community. The Principal will be an accomplished relationship builder, a talented educator and a trusted colleague with a proven track record of fairness and impartiality. The successful candidate will be caring, creative and, above all, committed to the success of every Junior School student and their families.
The Principal will understand the unique dynamics and demands of primary education. They will build upon the established successes of GNS’ Primary Years Programme (PYP) and identify and develop further opportunities to enrich the school’s unique approach to the International Baccalaureate Programme. The Principal will be a connector, able to create meaningful relationships with students and parents and position themselves as a trusted resource for current families. They will also be a primary contributor to the school’s enrolment efforts, helping to ensure that GNS continues to attract and retain students and families who intend to remain at the school for the long term.
The successful candidate will also be deeply committed to developing the skills and abilities of the faculty and staff of the Junior School. They will work to create individualized plans for teachers and support their professional growth in both formal and informal settings. The Principal will further enhance the culture of open communication that already exists at the Junior School, and will sustain an environment in which diversity, mutual respect and transparency are able to flourish. The successful candidate will recognize the importance of a positive school culture and will take steps to ensure that the Junior School remains a workplace of choice for every employee.
The Principal will play a key role on GNS’ Senior Leadership team, reporting to the Deputy Head, Academics, and collaborating regularly with the Middle and Senior Principals and other senior leaders in both short- and long-term planning. They will help direct the creation and execution of the next GNS strategic plan and will ensure that the unique needs and expectations of students and families at the Junior School are effectively articulated. The Principal will also solicit input from and work alongside the Junior School’s active, committed parent community to maximize understanding of the school’s mission, vision and values.

Candidate Qualifications

The Principal oversees all aspects of Junior School operations and works to inspire, engage and support faculty, staff, students and families to do their best through truth and courage in academics, the arts, athletics and citizenship. The Principal leads and integrates activities that ensure each student receives a nurturing and challenging educational experience that prepares them to be committed, creative, and compassionate global citizens. The successful candidate will be a positive role model for the GNS community and will play a lead role in building relationships both within GNS and in the broader community.
We are seeking an exceptional leader to build upon the success already enjoyed at the Junior School and to lead in efforts to continue its evolution. Above all else, the new Principal will be the moral compass of the Junior School, setting the tone, holding community members accountable, and clearly articulating and modelling the values that have made this school the exceptional community that it is.
