GNS Jazz Band Swings into Spring
On Monday, the Senior Jazz Orchestra and Middle School Jazz Band played to a packed house at Hermann's Jazz club. The show was a celebration of the work of legendary jazz musician Charles Mingus, and also featured performances by the Don Leppard Big Band.
In class, students learn about jazz by investigating important artists. In addition to preparing pieces from Mingus' repertoire, they've have analyzed, reviewed and responded to his works. The crowd at Hermann's was lively and the evening was a great start to another promising spring season at GNS.
On Tuesday, SS Jazz Orchestra students kept the ball rolling with a trip to CFB Esquimalt to work with the Naden Big Band.
It was a wonderful opportunity to work closely with seasoned professional musicians: the students sat with their musical "counterparts" and watched them at work, then collaborated on several pieces and got valuable feedback. At the end of the day, band director Steve Thompson says the day was a "phenomenal" experience that left the students buzzing.
Overall, it's been a busy week packed with excitement for GNS Jazz players. Keep an eye out for lots more concerts and events on the horizon!
