GNS Launches New Capital Campaign at the WEEKEND OF WONDER
On October 4 and 5, GNS held a spectacular celebration of community that was the Weekend of Wonder—one of the largest events of this kind in the history of our school! The weekend offered something for community members of all ages, from a family carnival to late-night dancing at the Gala.
The celebration kicked off on Friday afternoon with a series of fun events for students, staff and families. Junior School students bussed to Pemberton Woods to join the Senior and Middle School students for a Whole School Terry Fox Run around the turf field and campus.
Following the run, everyone gathered in front of the Denford Hall, where Deputy Head of School Chad Holtum officially launched the school's Wonder Campaign. He introduced the Campaign Cabinet and announced the fundraising goal of $27 million. Then came the most exciting part of the day when it was revealed that an incredible $15 million has already been raised by generous supporters putting us over halfway toward our goal!
"That is, by far, the most ambitious fundraising target in our school's history," said Cabinet Co-Chair Donja Blokker-Dalquist. "But we believe in this campaign, and we believe in GNS."
After the announcement, Lisa Drury, Senior School Library Administrator surprised the group with a touching rendition of "I have a Dream" followed by a group of enthusiastic students, staff and community members—led by Learning Strategies teacher Megan Coll—breaking into a flashmob.
"It was the most fun!" Megan says of the dance. "I created the moves with the intention of connecting to all of the staff and people in the community so they would feel comfortable to join in: upbeat, bouncy, and fun. I am glad the Dance Club was able to help me kick it off!"
Next it was time to blow up the bouncy castles and start the cotton candy machine. Despite a little rain at the beginning of the carnival, students, parents, and staff alike made the most of the many stations and activities on offer, including a staff vs alumni soccer game (won by the alums!), a dunk tank, and a beer garden for the adults.
