Building Community Between Grades

The Grade 3s had a special presentation from some Grade 11 students. 
Three Grade 11 students recently led the Grade 3 classes through multiple science demonstrations at the Mountain on the Beach Drive Campus. As part of their IB Diploma CAS projects, Lizzie Emslie, Juliette Seroussi and Angelina Blum ran three experiments about the states of matter. 

“We built the experiments around what they were learning, and gave them an interactive experience to better their understanding,” said Lizzie. 

“The experiments gave them a sensory learning experience that they were able to visualize and ask questions about; it was a good experience,” added Angelina. 

Lizzie, Angelina and Juliette are all interested in science and thought this was a good way to share their expertise, work on a CAS project and get to know the GNS community a little bit more. 

“We are all interested in sciences, and we like to interact with younger students,” explained Juliette. “We don’t get to see the Junior School students, so this was a neat way to interact with them.” 

The Grade 3s also enjoyed their interaction and learning with the Grade 11s. 

“My favourite experiment was the oobleck,” said Christopher. “It was cool we got to touch it, and it was just so fun.” 

“It was great learning from the Grade 11s,” said Nanxi. “They were older than us, and I enjoyed following their presentations.” 

The experience was exciting for the Grade 3s as they had their older peers teach them, but the Grade 11 group also enjoyed seeing their inquisitive minds. 

“It was fun to see how excited they got, and reminded us of how excited they get about learning, and how many questions they ask,” said Lizzie, with all of them noting how eager the Grade 3s were to volunteer and ask questions. 

“It shows that your efforts are worth it because they care about everything you are showing them, so I felt like it also gave us some satisfaction,” said Juliette.
