A Milestone Achieved: Celebrating the IB Extended Essay

IB Diploma Programme
A cake that says "Congratulations on your Extended Essay

In a significant milestone of their academic journey, International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme students gathered on November 21 to celebrate the completion of their Extended Essays. The achievement marks the culmination of months of hard work, dedication and intellectual growth.

Addressing the students during the ceremony, IB Diploma Coordinator Angie Girard highlighted the significance of the Extended Essay, describing it not merely as a requirement, but as a testament to the students’ resilience, intellectual curiosity and determination.

“The Extended Essay is no small feat,” Madame Girard noted. “It challenges you to delve deeply into a subject you are passionate about, to think critically, and to navigate the complexities of research and analysis. You’ve had to manage deadlines, refine your arguments, and overcome moments of frustration, but today, we celebrate your perseverance.”

The Extended Essay, an essential component of the IB Diploma, requires students to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice, producing a 4,000-word paper. It’s an intensive process that not only tests academic skills but also fosters personal growth, as students learn to manage long-term projects, articulate complex ideas, and solve problems independently.

Madame Girard emphasized that the skills gained through the Extended Essay—research, critical thinking and effective communication—would serve the students throughout their lives. “You’ve developed invaluable skills that will stay with you long after you leave the classroom,” she said. “You should be incredibly proud of what you’ve accomplished.”

The ceremony also included acknowledgements for the students’ support systems. The contributions of supervisors, parents, host families and peers were recognized as integral to their success. However, it was the students’ own perseverance and commitment that ultimately led them to this achievement.

As these students look forward to the remaining challenges of the IB Diploma Programme, they are encouraged to reflect on their journey through the Extended Essay. The experience serves as a powerful reminder that with determination and focus, they are capable of achieving great things.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to this group of dedicated students. The hard work invested in the Extended Essay will undoubtedly pave the way for further success in your academic and personal futures. This is just the beginning of many more successes to come!
