On Saturday May 10, GNS took part in the Fairfield Gonzales Community Association’s Yard Sale, hosting tables so neighbourhood residents could sell off old treasures and discover new ones. Many GNS students volunteered to operate booths that helped raise awareness for different and important causes such as awareness for Canadian women in science and health and wellness for young adults in British Columbia.
There was also a costume sale, hosted by our students with the help of Ms. Adrienne Smook, which sold costumes from the costume loft and donated clothes. Each piece of clothing was $1 and raised $190 in total! The affordable price of the costumes paired with Ms. Tamara Slobogean’s fantastic marketing skills makes our costume loft 190 items lighter, while funds raised will go to support two important charities. Many people found stylish pieces to add to their wardrobe, such as one young woman who was very excited to have found her prom dress for just $1!

A couple of students from GNS Round Square hosted a Bake Sale to raise awareness about women in science. They sold baked goods made by talented volunteers from the Senior School and raised almost $260 in addition to successfully raising awareness for SCWIST (Society for Canadian Women in Science and Technology), an organization promoting Canadian women in science. A popular baked good was the Tres Leches Cake made by Isabella Jubb ’26. Although it was seemingly difficult to eat cake while taking a stroll, many people still enjoyed the delicious sweet treat. Other students were handing out flyers about an event called Youth Bound, which will be held on June 7 at GNS in support of Foundry BC, a province-wide network of health and wellness services for those aged 12-24. To learn more about Foundry BC, visit the website at foundrybc.ca.
Despite starting out with a little rain, the yard sale was a great success. Ms. Slobogean, one of the key organizers, mentioned how, “I was repeatedly stopped by people who commented on the beautiful venue for a yard sale, the community spirit, the warm and welcoming students and just the great vibes!” Most importantly, this yard sale is an example of how a local effort can have benefits that reach far and wide. By raising awareness and funds for important charities, we can help Foundry BC and their mission to provide young adults with mental health supports and counselling services. Meanwhile, SCWIST has made success in science more accessible to many students, starting right in the classroom.

Thank you to all the volunteers, students and parents, who dedicated their Saturday to helping out with the yard sale. Special thanks to Mr. Robert Mullins, Ms. Adrienne Smook, Ms. Cheryl Alexander and Ms. Tamara Slobogean for organizing this wonderful, informative and fun community event! If you missed the sale this year, look forward to next year, as this may become a new GNS tradition!
