The Junior Kindergarten 4 classes worked hard on their Unit of Inquiry on the Five Senses last term! Through hands-on experiences and thoughtful discussions, students explored how their senses help them interpret and engage with the world around them. By identifying sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, children gained a deeper understanding of how these senses enhance daily life, support safety, and bring enjoyment to learning.

Our goal was to cultivate curiosity, sharpen observation skills, and foster an appreciation of how our senses shape our experiences. Aligned with the International Baccalaureate and Reggio-inspired inquiry-based approach, our activities encouraged active participation, critical thinking, and meaningful exploration.

At Nature School, children fully immersed themselves in sensory exploration—touching tree bark, digging in sand, and breathing in the fresh sea air. In the classroom, we created sensorial materials inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, allowing children to refine their perception of textures, sounds, and scents. Collaborative discussions helped develop their language and communication skills as they shared their discoveries.

One highlight of the topic was the JK4-F class reading Pancakes, Pancakes! by Eric Carle. Inspired by the story, we made our own apple pancakes, engaging multiple senses as we mixed, cooked, and tasted our delicious creation! JK4-S explored Lunar New Year food, exploring their senses of taste amongst other senses as a parent very kindly brought in a Chinese rice dish to share.

Students also demonstrated agency by selecting their own sensory activities, strengthening their independence and decision-making skills.

By integrating storytelling, songs, and games, we made learning joyful and memorable. Through these varied approaches, students successfully met our learning objectives, gaining confidence in recognizing and articulating how they use their senses to navigate and understand their world.
