Sweet Treats with a Purpose: the Charity from Scratch Bake Sale

The Charity from Scratch bake sale has once again lived up to its reputation as “the biggest and the best” bake sale of the year at GNS. Accompanied by the perfect weather of sunny skies and a gentle breeze, this year’s Charity from Scratch was a success! 

“I think the bake sale went really well because everything ran smoothly,” said Janey Bryan ’26. “Seeing teachers and students excited about the baked goods, and knowing that it was all going toward a good cause was my favourite part.” 

This year saw a remarkable turnout with over 38 talented bakers from the GNS community contributing a mouthwatering array of treats. From chocolate cupcakes to snickerdoodle cookies and a tempting selection of hearty brownies and mini cheesecakes, there was a treat for everyone. 

Clio Milwright ’26 said, “There was a great deal of participation, and it meshed smoothly with the Gryphon Government initiatives. The Charity from Scratch bake sale is always such a great way to bring some life to the last term, and get everyone together! I particularly enjoyed trying out some of the baked goods—I can confirm that they were absolutely delicious.” 

With Round Square’s bake sale and Gryphon Government’s Spring Market, the courtyard was transformed into a marketplace, buzzing with energy and the lively chatter of staff and students. Homemade scrunchies and jewellery, mini plant seedlings, and delicious sweets—what more could you ask for on a beautiful Wednesday afternoon? Even with five minutes before the start of class, students were still stopping by, eager to contribute to the initiatives. 

“It’s important to keep doing these kinds of events because they bring our community together and raise awareness and support for meaningful causes,” said Janey. “Plus, they’re a fun way to get involved and make a difference!” 

“They also help provide for the more vulnerable in our communities,” added Clio. “They bring inspiration and awareness to the school.” 

This year the students selected the Rainbow Kitchen to receive the proceeds from the sale. Established in 2010, this Victoria organization is regarded as a hub for food security programming in the Capital Regional District and provides hot meals and food sharing to anyone in need—no questions asked.

The collective efforts of the bakers and enthusiastic staff and students resulted in an impressive $1169.30, which will go directly to support Rainbow Kitchen. The Charity from Scratch bake sale was a resounding success and could not have been possible without the support of our GNS community.
