At Glenlyon Norfolk School (GNS), we believe that education should be as unique as the young people we serve. Nestled on Vancouver Island in Victoria, GNS is proud to be the region’s only full International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum school, offering world-class learning from age three to graduation. But while our programs are globally recognized, our focus remains deeply personal: we know every student by name, nurture their passions, and empower them to become their best selves.
One School, Multiple Pathways
Families considering independent education often ask, “What’s the right academic path for my child?” At GNS, the answer is refreshingly flexible. Roughly half of our Senior School students pursue the full IB Diploma Programme (IB DP), a globally respected qualification that consistently places our graduates well above international averages. The other half follow the BC Provincial Dogwood pathway, often combining provincial courses with individual IB DP subjects. Last year, the 84 graduates took an average of three IB Diploma Programme courses each along with their academic Provincial course load. Regardless of curriculum choice, all students at GNS benefit from the DNA of the IB with its learner profile attributes and inquiry-based approaches to learning.
This means that whether your child graduates with a BC Dogwood Diploma or both the Dogwood and IB Diplomas, they do so equipped with the same habits of mind: curiosity, critical thinking, balance and resilience. Our graduates are not stamped from a single mould. Instead, they are empowered to have agency and take ownership of their learning as they chart their own unique course for success. They are supported by highly-qualified faculty with both subject matter knowledge and expertise and substantial experience in cultivating child development and nurturing well-being. Our faculty foster high-level thinking and independent decision-making. Furthermore, this care extends beyond the classroom. Our nurse, coaches, administration, counsellors, learning strategists, activity leaders, and support staff all put students first.
At GNS, there is no single path to success—only the one your child will forge for themselves.
Proven Results, Exceptional Opportunities
At GNS, academic flexibility never comes at the expense of achievement. Year after year, our students’ IB results surpass global averages. For example, 100% of our Class of 2025 students who embarked on the full IB Diploma Programme earned their IB Diplomas last May. This is a number we are particularly proud of considering the global pass rate was 81%. For the IB Diploma’s core components—the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge—GNS students achieved the maximum three bonus points at a rate nearly double the global average. Our graduates (whether Dogwood or Dogwood and IB Diploma) receive offers from top universities around the world. They enter diverse programs in the sciences, arts, business and beyond. The common denominator is preparation: each student leaves with both the credentials and the confidence to thrive in post-secondary study and life.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
We believe education is about much more than transcripts and test scores. That’s why GNS students are engaged learners who develop transferable skills, including self-management, organization, communication and collaboration skills; they are creative and critical thinkers who learn to gather and analyze information and ask authentic, thought-provoking questions about the world around them. These approaches to learning skills are embedded in our approaches to teaching.
Our students engage in a wealth of co-curricular opportunities: outdoor education that takes them from the Salish Sea to alpine peaks, championship-level athletics, arts programs that inspire creativity, technology initiatives that encourage entrepreneurship and innovation, and leadership and public speaking opportunities that build confidence.
Along the way, students contribute meaningfully to their local and global communities, learning that both joy and success are best measured not only by personal growth, but by the positive impact one leaves on others and their environment. Through this service learning, students develop a strong sense of community and their place within it, growing into compassionate global citizens.
A Community That Cares
At the heart of GNS is a community where every voice matters. Our students are heard, supported and celebrated for who they are. Lessons are taught by subject specialists who have a deep love and understanding of their subject matter and create meaningful interdisciplinary connections, offering a holistic educational experience.
Families quickly discover that while our programs are rigorous, they are also accessible, and our culture is one of encouragement as much as challenge. We take pride in being diverse and inclusive, building a school where Caring is more than a value—it’s a daily lived experience. At any grade, many of our students receive various learning supports and accommodations.
Last year, 44% of our Grade 12 IB DP students, received Inclusive Assessment Arrangements to ensure that they could fully engage in learning, teaching and assessment. This highlights the accessibility of the IB DP. These arrangements help reduce and remove barriers by providing access to supports such as word processors, scribes, separate settings for exams, or extra time for exam completion.
The GNS community is intentional about its size; punching far above its weight with a myriad of programmatic offerings that provide students with opportunities and exposure to more than is even possible to try. By ensuring cohorts are tight and everyone knows each other, the community fosters friendships that last far beyond their time at school. In fact, this bond is one reason alumni continue to choose a GNS experience for their children.
