I started my career in the classroom teaching band, film-making and, believe it or not, typing. I have worn many hats in my 20+ year career in the educational sector: teacher, admissions professional and Head of School. Over the years, and countless conversations with families, one of the questions I am still most frequently asked is: “Why choose an independent school?”
Recently, I had the pleasure of returning to the admissions table, meeting with families who are looking for the right fit for their children. These are always fascinating conversations, and a recent one stands out. I met a GNS alumna from the Class of 1997 who now wanted her children to have the same structured, caring experience she had, but updated for today’s world.
She was looking for what we call “The GNS Effect.”

At Glenlyon Norfolk School, the GNS Effect is the way we describe the transformative journey and lasting impact our educational experience has on a student. It is a lifelong impact that begins with a strong sense of belonging in our community. In essence, this alumna was looking for what most families seek: academic excellence combined with innovation, offered in a deeply caring environment where students feel supported, known and empowered.
When you choose GNS, you’re choosing an educational journey. As a “World School” and an “IB Continuum School,” the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework begins in the Primary Years and moves through the Middle Years. This path is defined by a learning approach centred on inquiry—encouraging curiosity, exploration, questioning and deep thinking. This is where the GNS Effect truly takes root, fostering a mindset that lasts far beyond a student’s time on our campus.

What sets GNS apart is how this inquiry-based foundation evolves as students approach the finish line. While most IB schools mandate that every student take the full IB Diploma, I believe there is another way. At GNS, our version of the IB is about choice. In their final two years, students can choose the full IB Diploma or create a “hybrid” experience, “cherry-picking” courses based on their passions. We empower our students to build their own path to graduation, cultivating the initiative and leadership they will need for life beyond school.
Another key component of the “GNS way” is the belief that learning doesn’t stop when the bell rings. Families choose an independent school because they want a robust co-curricular program that is just as intentional as the academic one. Whether on the pitch or on the stage, we create the context for students to find their unique voices. These aren’t just activities, they are the arenas where confidence is built. Through athletics and our arts programs, students learn the discipline and teamwork required to lead with both strength and compassion.

This confidence is further refined through service learning. Our students engage with their communities not as a checklist requirement, but as a core part of their identity. Whether making sandwiches for Our Place or spearheading an environmental initiative, they are taught to look outward. We pair this action with reflection, giving students the space to ask: How did my actions impact others? What did I learn about myself? This cycle of action and reflection ensures that a GNS graduate leaves not just with a diploma, but with a clear sense of social responsibility and the preparedness to make a difference.
We bring the world to GNS through our curriculum and our community. While we are a Victoria school through and through (93% of our students hail from Greater Victoria), we also host students from some 21 different countries. This global perspective enriches every classroom discussion. These international bonds create an environment where students don’t just read about the world—they experience it through their friendships, growing into leaders who understand the value of diverse perspectives.

Education is a journey, and the earlier you can spark a love of learning, the more profound the GNS Effect will be. If we can create a genuine love of learning at ages three, four or five, imagine the impact of that gift when that student is 50, 60 or 70 years old. It is deeply fulfilling to see this spark everywhere: from the wonder on the face of a Grade 5 student raising bees in Nature School, to the satisfaction of Grade 11 Math students solving complex problems on the white boards of our “Thinking Classrooms.”
We aren’t just preparing students for a university entrance exam, we’re setting them up to be confident, capable, lifelong learners. Ultimately, what matters most is “fit”—finding a place where a child feels truly seen. Families choose GNS because they seek a partner in their child’s growth. In this community, students develop a sense of purpose and an inquiring mind that will empower them for the rest of their lives. That is the GNS Effect—a transformative experience that starts early and lasts a lifetime.
