Imagine a preschool that nurtures your child’s curiosity

A preschool where children, with teachers as their guides, explore the world around them, share experiences, learn and play together. An environment that embraces a Montessori methodology, within the framework of the respected International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. These are the Early Childhood Programs at Glenlyon Norfolk School.
Glenlyon Norfolk School is pleased to be offering two early childhood programs at our Beach Drive Campus: our First Steps half-day program for three-year-olds and our full-day Junior Kindergarten for four-year-olds.

What Makes Our Program Special?

  1. Our teachers introduce and implement learning within the framework of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. We are the only school in Victoria to offer this enriched, inquiry-based program.
  2. We have an 8:1 student-to-teacher ratio in our JK classrooms.
  3. Physical Education, French, Music, Art and Library teachers support the work of the classroom teachers, providing specialist instruction and enrichment. Children develop early literacy and numeracy skills and have access to a fully equipped gymnasium, art room, music room and an extensive primary library.
  4. Every Thursday—rain or shine—Nature School provides our children with the opportunity to learn by exploring the outdoors.
  5. Our in-class learning takes place in new, purpose-built classrooms, specifically designed to enhance the experience of our youngest students.
  6. Our students get to learn and play at the only oceanfront Junior School in Canada.

    Our daughter, Hallie, came into Junior Kindergarten a cautious little girl who struggled to hold a pencil properly. She knew nobody and was as anxious as her parents. Throughout the year she grew in leaps and bounds! Building friendships, singing French and Mandarin songs, skipping to school, confidently talking about her school work and the learner profile. We couldn't have asked for anything more. She truly thrived in this inclusive environment.

    Our two children both thrived during their time in JK at GNS. We wanted them to have a positive school experience—to have fun, become more confident, and to grow emotionally and socially. They grew in so many more ways! They especially loved Nature School where they explored the outdoors each and every week. JK allowed them to become part of an amazing school community and allowed them to learn what school is all about. By the time kindergarten came around, they were more than ready for the challenge. JK was an amazing opportunity!

    The JK program at GNS was the perfect 'first' school experience for my children. Between the beachfront classroom and nature school, they learned how to explore, think and care about our planet. My children learned about patterns, peace, senses, and developed early literacy and numeracy skills. What really stood out to me were the real-life learning pieces—my children learned how to share, how to look people in the eye when they were speaking, how to shake hands to greet people, and how to thank someone properly. We all need a village to raise our children, and GNS has been ours.
