Beach Drive Phase One Fully Funded!

While it is still in its organizational phase, the capital campaign to transform Beach Drive and Pemberton Woods is already receiving significant support from our community. With the campaign’s formal launch now scheduled for April of 2019 (you’ll hear lots more about this soon) early supporters have stepped forward with remarkable levels of support such that we have been able to proceed with the revamping of Beach Drive earlier than we had originally anticipated.

A committed team has been working for over 18 months with expert consultant, Ross Marsh. We first completed an encouraging feasibility study and then started planning and organizing. We obtained constructive feedback about our plans, which are intended to build upon the growing support for fundraising shown by our community over the last several years. Parent support of our Annual Giving program has seen astounding growth, from 18% participation 4 years ago to more than 50% in 2016/17! This support has enhanced student learning across the school by allowing us to purchase specialized educational furniture, iPads and Chrome Books and to secure funding for large-scale capital projects. Our Major Gifts program has also grown exponentially in the past half-decade, allowing us to complete significant renovations to the Scott Fitness Centre, the Dining Hall, The Music Centre and the Gudewill Gymnasium.

Our school is similar to many of the other 100-plus not-for-profit member schools across Canada that make up the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS). Currently we budget to break even, with tuition revenues matching operating costs that are mostly comprised of salaries and benefits for the expert, committed teachers and staff who bring our educational programs to life. Enhancing our facilities and building our endowments for bursary and financial aid requires the support of generous, forward looking donors.

We are delighted that our work thus far with a group of committed and inspiring “early adopter” donors has allowed us to fully fund Phase 1 of the Beach Drive project. We are profoundly grateful for the generosity of those who have already committed to leading the school into our second century. Our planning efforts have also secured significant initial support for the project’s next steps, which includes the new Main Building. A comprehensive renovation of the Coach House and the addition of a number of all-weather playing surfaces will constitute a final phase of this project. We have also received excellent feedback and support for our plans to continue to transform Pemberton Woods. As with Beach Drive, we are committed to securing the necessary funding to complete the Pemberton Woods project while also ensuring the continued financial health of the school.

Therefore, we are pleased to report that exciting progress has been made in the organizational phase of the fundraising campaign to support our Campus Transformation aspirations. As noted above, we aim to formally unveil the official fundraising campaign to our school community in April 2019, but if you are eager to be involved and wish to help now, please do not hesitate to contact Deputy Head, Chad Holtum, at (250) 370-6801 or choltum@mygns.ca.
