Though outside the skies were stormy and rain was falling, it was warm and cozy inside the Beach Library Learning Commons on Tuesday, September 17 when a group of Grade 5 students sat down to puzzle over a new project. Led by Hilary Cross and Sarah McLeod, the enthusiastic students gathered over their lunch break to unbox their own pint-sized “Ozobots”— tiny robots that can follow basic commands in the form of lines on paper. “We’re doing even more collaborative teaching in the LLC this year,” Sarah says. “It is a wonderful space, and with the recent construction we’ll be hosting even more activities. We’ve adapted to what’s going on, and what our community needs.” The Grade 5 students had a chance to get a feel for the Ozobots and spent some time going over the instructions. In the coming weeks, they’ll customize the robots’ designs and figure out the best ways to program them using more line commands. It’s a great introduction into basic programming, and provides students with a foundation for more complicated code. In addition to the Ozobot builders, the LLC will continue to be a place for students to come check out books, read, draw, create, play games and enjoy the space. With, of course tThe Grade 4 Library Squad, who continues to help Mrs. McLeod with shelving books and planning events every Tuesday at first recess. There’s lots to look forward to in the Beach Drive LLC: more collaborative teaching, tons of cool lessons, recess and lunch fun and a great collection of books curated by Ms. McLeod and and Ms. Marsh. Come on in and check it out… Ssee you in the LLC!
