Exploring Different Light Sources

The Grade 1s have been learning about how light and sound can change the way we experience our world through their IB PYP Unit of Inquiry into “How the world works.” Students created lightboxes to help illustrate their learning of lights.

They learned about the two types of light sources (natural and artificial) and were tasked to find three to four sources of light for their boxes. In addition to those light sources, the Grade 1s used cereal boxes and wax paper to create their lightboxes.

Some of the sources of light students came up with included:

  • Jellyfish
  • Glowsticks
  • Stars
  • Sun
  • Moon
  • Flashlights
  • Firefly
  • Lightning
  • Fire
  • Glowfish
  • The Universe

Some students came up with scenes as well, including a wolf howling at the moon, the Northern Lights, starry nights and more!

“I enjoyed doing this all ourselves,” said Bryce. “You get to draw and cut everything out yourself.”

Lexie and Catherine both agreed they had fun making their lightboxes. “I liked painting the box all black, we had to get every part of it,” they said.

“My favorite part was gluing the light sources,” added Jasper.

Students came up with a variety of ways they might use their lightboxes at home including on their side table, as a night light, or to help with reading in the dark.

Way to go Grade 1s!
