Fun Week Builds School Spirit

Monday was the start of a fun-filled GNS Spirit Week in the Senior School organized by the Prefect Team and Ms. Nielson. For four days out of the five school days, students were allowed to wear themed outfits.

On Monday, it was Pajama Day! There were many different pajamas. Some wore cute onesies, others wore matching pants and tops, some had extremely fuzzy covers, and others apparently slept in their GNS uniform, presumably so it was easier in the morning.

Decade Day on Tuesday was a huge hit. Some students wore 1970s style frayed jeans and blouses while others sported a bright assortment of clothing resembling the style of the 1980s. Decked out in scrunchies, colorful makeup, and rainbow outfits, the 1980s style was pretty popular amongst students. Many students dressed in the 2020 clothing style of comfy sweatpants and hoodies. A few students arrived as 2022 GNS students, sporting the new GNS Gryphon Hoodies.

On Tuesday, there was also karaoke in the Gudewill Learning Commons. The karaoke was very popular, with some teachers popping in to see the show as well as many Grade 9s and 12s. Bravo to the brave group of Grade 9s and Grade 12s who performed. A group of Grade 12 girls sang a few songs, their voices were pitch perfect, contrary to the Grade 12 boys who would sing next. They performed Let It Go from Disney’s hit animation, Frozen. They couldn’t hit the high notes, but it was an amazing performance either way as the audience had lots of fun watching them.

Wednesday was Twin Day, where pairs of students and teachers dressed alike, with students trying to fool their teachers and teachers trying to baffle their students. Possibly the best twins around were Ms. Girard and Ms. Nielson, with their matching ponchos. Apparently, the ponchos were one of the many identical items that they have, bought at the same store but not at the same time. Both teachers found that they had the same sense of style which, as Ms. Nielson pointed out, was very stylish. They both like jewel tones best and say they have the habit of finishing each other’s sentences.

Thursday was a special day for the Grade 12s special day. Many came in formal wear while others embraced the opportunity to show off their personal style. The group gathered in the Gudewill Learning Commons for some tasty treats and some photo opps before taking part in a group activity. The class was divided in two and then they had 20 minutes to build a fort using mostly cardboard boxes. The results were assessed using a rubric by Mr. Holtum, Mr. Thorau and Mr. Taylor.

Friday was Casual Day for everybody, with donations going towards the Stigma-Free Society, an organization that committed to combating stigmas, with a focus on mental health. The Senior School hosted speakers from the group at assembly on January 19.

It has been a fun week for students, filled with spirit building activities. Thank you to the Senior School Prefect Team and Ms. Nielson for all the hard work that went into organizing this week for GNS.
