In the first article we had a discussion with Connor Roberts ‘22 and Mackenzie Heaney ‘22, the vibrant personalities behind the roles of Sam and Donna. Last week, our conversation focused on Jack Berry ’22, Rebecca Palm ’23, Mary Dunne ’22, Finlay Walker-Cutt ’23, and Madeleine Kelly ’23, the talented actors cast as Bill Austin, Sophie, Harry Bright and Donna.

This week, a sneak peek into the Wednesday rehearsal saw the cast dressed in full costumes for the first time! Despite Victoria weather suddenly getting colder, the crew were all decked out in summer clothes fit for a trip to a small Greek island, as they prepared for their recording of the trailer and other promotional media. Each actor will also be featured in the program distributed during the play with their costumes.

After a quick warm up, the actors jumped right into their songs coached by Ms. Amanda Chaval. It was hard to resist the urge to sing along, move or just tap your feet to the infectious beats as they sang each song one after another.

In an interview with a member of the Chorus of Islanders and Wedding guests, Luise Rau ’24, who was also a part of Radium Girls, we talked a little about her favorite part of the musical and of course, her answer was the music!

Her personal favorite song in the musical is “Under Attack”, the last single released by ABBA before they retired. This song is also used only in the musical and was not in the film version of Mamma Mia. Some interpret the lyrics as having a paranoid quality which may explain why it is used in a dream scene. Luise favours the ethereal setting of the dream scene, although not to spoil the musical, Luise alluded to the fact that “many interesting things happen in that scene.”

Performances for Mamma Mia will run on March 9, 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. and on March 12 at 2 p.m. Due to the current set of COVID-19 restrictions, seating will be limited to 50% capacity for Denford Hall. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors and will be available for purchase online beginning Saturday, February 25. Watch Facebook and Instagram for the link and the trailer.
