GNS Golfer Headed to World Championships

At only nine years old, GNS student Sarah Kim will be representing Team Canada at the 2019 US Kids Golf World Championships in August. The competition will take place in Pinehurst, North Carolina from August 1-3. Sarah qualified through the Maple Leaf Junior Tour in May, where she came first in her age division. There are several qualifying sites throughout Canada; when all tournaments are finished, the best scorer against the course rating is chosen for each age division. Sarah is a keen golfer and hard-working athlete. During her qualifying round in Tsawwassen, she had a tough 12th hole, making a triple bogey. “Sarah learned from past disappointments, namely, how important it is to control your emotions, put the mistakes behind you and not let them affect your next shot,” says mother Jennifer Kim. Even though she had one bad hole, she was able to get her head back in the game, and ended up finishing strong to secure first place. Sarah has been golfing since she was four, when she was introduced to the game through her older sister, Rebecca, and her father. She first began tournament golf by playing in Zone 6 events. Since her family moved to Victoria in September 2018, she has been playing in the Vikes Tour and is now a junior member at the Victoria Golf Club. She recently competed in the Zone 5 Junior Girls Tournament, and will be competing at the BC Bantam Championship in August, in addition to the US Kids Golf World Championships. Jennifer says that at the World Championship, Sarah is most looking forward to representing Team Canada and meeting friends from all over the world. Outstanding work, Sarah!
