Grade 10 Personal Project Check-in

IB Middle Years Programme

The reviews are mixed: some students are firing through their Personal Project, staying on top of their timeline and work, while others are feeling less ready, having underestimated the time they needed to produce their product.

Antonia Willers ’26, whose project is about baking bread, feels that her project is going well: “I finished all my research and [the required section of the draft report], as well as the meeting trackers and bibliography. All the things we had to complete are completed.” Despite having to alter some details to her learning and product goal, she’s not worried about the upcoming deadline, all she has to do is “stay organized and keep working on it.”

“Although my project hasn’t started yet, I am excited to start tattooing on fruit or fake skin,” said Reese Suntok ’26, who is learning how to draw tattoos as part of her personal project. “I’m not too worried about the deadline, because I think that once I start tattooing and am done with the research, it should be quick and fun.”

Students such as Zax Zhang ’26 and Freya Simoneau ’26, whose projects involve a little more time, are beginning to feel stressed. Their projects include learning how to cross-stitch and how to crochet.

“I’m worried about the deadline,” said Zax Zhang ’26. “It takes a long time to finish a cross-stitch pattern, and I’m still deciding on the theme.”

Freya Simoneau ’26 has to complete all her crochet projects by December as she plans to sell them as part of the Winter Market. “I’m really worried, because sometimes my crochet projects don’t work out and I have to restart,” she admitted. “One of my crochet ghosts—that I’ve tried about four times already—turned out to be a lumpy, white sausage.” Her plan to tackle this deadline is to follow her detailed schedule and look for extra time to complete as much as she can.

The Personal Project requires a substantial amount of work outside of school and which can be especially hard when students have to balance assignments that are piling up, and last-minute summatives that are being crammed into the week before the November break. Hopefully, the break will be a time for students to catch up on homework, refresh their batteries or to madly finish their Personal Projects.
