Gerald was a Junior National Tennis Doubles champion in 1981 (with Dale Willard, brother of former GNS alum Trevor). He attended the University of California, Berkeley where he played collegiate tennis and was on a team consistently ranked top 15 in the United States. During his college career he recorded singles and doubles victories over top universities such as Stanford, USC, UCLA and Pepperdine.

He has taught tennis at all levels for over 20 years in Colorado, California and Hong Kong, eventually founding the North Island Tennis Academy (NITA) because of his love for the sport and his interests in growing tennis in the region.He believed the best way to achieve this is to focus young tennis players, and he is very excited about the Canadian progressive tennis system which has generated new found interest in the sport globally by allowing kids to begin playing at a younger age.

In recent years his students have won four provincial championships and represented BC at multiple National Championships. He has also taught many seniors who have represented Canada on the Senior National Team at the world championships.

Darryl is the CEO of ClearOne Badminton out of Richmond, Calgary, and Orlando. With three clubs in three different cities, Darryl has devoted his athletic and professional coaching career to the pursuit of excellence. Coaching some of Canada’s top athletes, Darryl provides expertise stemming from his experience as a Canadian Olympic Team Member at the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, a Commonwealth Games representative in 1994 and 1998, and as the National Champion in 1995, 1996, and 1998.

He has been a valuable asset to badminton in British Columbia for many years, most notably for his role in offering athletes an affordable place to train. Darryl has helped produce athletes that have competed at the Olympics, International and national levels, as well as over 60 provincial champions.

He leads by example promoting etiquette and fair play amongst his athletes, and encourages them to deepen their badminton knowledge and develop leadership skills through ongoing coaching education. His contribution to the local community transcends borders as he regularly attracts experts from all over the world to teach his coaches and athletes new skills, putting Richmond on the global map for badminton. In 2018, he was the winner of the prestigious Bob Bearpark Coach of the Year award in the category of high performance.
