Gryphon Gallery: Timothy Williams

Alumni

Born in England, his family arrived in Victoria when he was seven and he attended GNS (Glenlyon Preparatory) from 1974 (Grade 4) to 1978 (Grade 7). Composing movie scores impassioned Tim in his early days at Glenlyon. He gives credit to Assistant Headmaster, Keith Walker and Choir Director Madeleine Humer (Groos) for their encouragement. According to ‘Glenlyon lore,’ he scored one of Atom Egoyan’s first films while the two were still at the Beach Campus.

Tim spent his high school days at SMUS and while there formed a friendship with Andrew Sabiston (actor, voice actor, writer, story editor and multi-award nominated Canadian children’s television series developer). The two collaborated on a project that was to take some time to complete but became Timothy’s first successful musical score, Napoleon.

While this production was playing in London, opportunities opened up for Tim. He moved to Los Angeles and worked on live shows at Disney and SeaWorld and eventually in Hollywood. That move put his career into fast forward, particularly for composing, conducting and orchestrating in film. Since 2002, composition highlights have included:

  • Wild Horses, written and directed by Robert Duvall, (Robert Duvall, James Franco and Josh Hartnett)
  • Walking With the Enemy (Ben Kingsley)
  • I.T., directed by John Moore and starring Pierce Brosnan
  • The Mulberry Tree (Joe Morton)
  • Red Sky (Rachael Leigh Cook and Bill Pullman)
  • Debug (Jason Momoa)
  • Beyond All Boundaries (Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt).

He has also written additional music for and/or orchestrated/conducted over 60 other films including Get Out, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Hidden Figures, It, Sucker Punch, Watchmen, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and 300. For Disney and Universal, his live theatrical works include adaptations and orchestrations of Aladdin, Wicked, Tangled -The Musical and 30 other shows. His most recent projects have been to score the horror/thriller We Summon the Darkness and the Netflix animation Agent Elvis.

He has won a Dora Award, four Thea awards, Best Original Soundtrack for The Butterfly Circus at the fps24 International Short Film Festival, eight ASCAP Plus Awards and was nominated for Best Composer for Red Sky by Motion Picture Sound Editors and Best Soundtrack by the Hollywood in Music Media Awards.
