By Gina Sicotte Inspired by the concept that one’s identity can be given and/or created, students explored how certain places have had an impact on who they are. The Grade 10 artists based their paintings on their own photos of landscapes they felt highlighted an aspect of their identity. Further inspiration for these pieces came from researching Canadian painters from the Group of Seven and the Professional National Indian Artists Incorporation – better known as the Indian Group of Seven- such as Eddy Cobiness and Franklin Carmichael. Founded in the 1920s, the Group of Seven painted Canadian landscapes in an impressionistic style. Students chose a painting style they admired, which they used to inspire their investigation into acrylic painting and exploring their own identities.
