Kindergarten Students Get Creative with Reading

With the move to GO!, Kindergarten teachers Ms. Sullivan and Ms. Bird wanted to maintain their familiar classroom routines within the new online environment, to help ease students in this transition and to preserve the community they had built. This meant incorporating sharing, storytime, weekly dance parties, and daily opportunities to read.

Kindergarten students are encouraged to read regularly for 10 minutes, and once a week, they record themselves reading on Seesaw, with their homeform teacher as their audience. This allows Ms. Sullivan and Ms. Bird to share in their stories and celebrate their reading efforts.

As the weeks of GO! continued, they introduced the BinGO card in connection with their daily reading to keep this important activity and skill development exciting and engaging for our young readers.

Students had many choices to choose from on their BinGO cards, including: read an animal book, read with sunglasses on, build a fort to read in, read using a flashlight, share a snack and story with a family member, draw and write about your story, read to your favourite stuffie, read in your pajamas, and much more. This way the Kindergarten students had the opportunity to learn to enjoy a book in a way that many of their older siblings and adults do—for entertainment and relaxation.
