How did you get started with math?

That’s a big question. Perhaps I can tell you where I started teaching? I really caught the math bug when I began teaching mathematics to new sailors in the Canadian Forces Fleet School in Esquimalt. Sailors required basic mathematics skills to perform their duties and it was my job to see that they met the minimum high school requirement for mathematics. Since they came from all over Canada, it was challenging to manage such a diverse group with differing skills. I enjoyed it and became a teacher when I got out of the Navy.

Why do you enjoy math?

I would say that I enjoy teaching mathematics more than I enjoy mathematics. One might think that teaching the same subject year after year would be boring, but every student sees mathematics in a different way and in 29 years of teaching I still get surprised with a unique question. That’s what makes it so interesting and fun.

How did the Math Help Centre get started?

The MHC was a unique facility well before I arrived at GNS. As to its origin, I would have to defer to my colleagues that have been at GNS much longer than I have.

What is the purpose of the Math Help Centre?

The MHC provides support to all students in the Senior School related to mathematics. Whether it is in small groups or one-on-one, there is a mathematics teacher available to assist students with their homework, assignments, study tips or test preparation. Occasionally, students come to us with questions related to SAT prep or mathematics coursework they are doing outside of the regular timetable. We’re here to help.

Who else helps with Math Help?

All the Senior School mathematics teachers are scheduled into lunchtime and after-school timeslots to help students. Any student can come in at any time to receive assistance. We are in Lower Simpson in room S105—sometimes if it gets really busy we spill over into room S103. On those days, just let the mathematics teacher on duty know where you are and we’ll find you.

You’ll find a mathematics teacher there every day from 12:30 to 1:05 p.m. and after school on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. There is a schedule posted outside the MHC door and there should be a schedule in everyone’s Google mathematics classroom.

Thank you Mr. Giommi for sharing with us your enthusiasm for teaching math! We are very lucky to have you as part of the GNS team. If any students have questions or just want to study with people who enjoy math, come to the Math Help Centre!
