During the Senior School assembly on May 31, several students were celebrated and received awards, trophies and medals, for achieving the highest scores at GNS and in the region in various mathematics contests.
Nearly 60 students from Grades 9 to 11 are in the extended mathematics program and the Math Club, and in February, they participated in the annual University of Waterloo’s Pascal, Cayley and Fermat math contests. As in past years, our students performed extremely well.
Receiving awards for highest scores at GNS were Christian Mundstock ’26 (Pascal), Candy Du ’25 (Cayley), Kevin Lim ’24 (Fermat) and Joseph He ’25 (Euclid).
The Fermat contest is for Grade 11 or lower students, and three Gryphons (Kevin, Joseph and Marvin Jeong ’24) distinguished themselves as their group combined scores placed them first in our zone (Greater Victoria Area) to be crowned Zone Team champions.
Additionally, Joseph participated in the University of Waterloo’s Euclid Mathematics Contest, which is written by over 20,000 participants worldwide and is geared toward Grade 12 students. Joseph, who is completing Grade 10, had the highest score for GNS.
“Seeing the students do so well really speaks to the rigour of the mathematics program, especially at the Grade 10 to 11 level where they move from the IB Middle Years Programme to the IB Diploma Programme,” said Mr. Giommi, Co-Head of Mathematics. “It gives us an unbiased assessment of their mathematical horsepower. We have really bright, dedicated students, and for many, this is a lot of fun.”
Students have a variety of ways to compete in mathematics contests throughout the year, especially when they are a part of the Math Club. They get the opportunity to participate in the Canadian Senior Mathematics Contest and the Canadian Intermediate Mathematics Contests as well as other team competitions.
In Middle School, students competed in the University of Waterloo’s Gauss Contest in Grades 7 and 8 and the Math League competitions for Grades 6 through 8.
