Spotlight on Service: April

Service Learning
For 27 years, Glenlyon Norfolk School has been a member of Round Square Schools. Round Square is an international network of 230 schools that share a commitment to character education and experiential learning built around six pillars—the IDEALS—International Understanding, Democracy, Environmental Stewardship, Adventure, Leadership and Service (roundsquare.org). Twenty Grade 5 students at the GNS Junior School, and over 130 students participate in Round Square Clubs in the GNS Middle, and Senior School Pemberton Woods Campus.

Here are some of the activities organized by Junior School students:

  •  PJ Day and picture book donation to support 1000×5 Victoria Literacy Project.
  • Crazy Sock Day and warm socks donation to support Our Place Society.
  • A Kindness Tree was created for students to recognize one another for acts of kindness, written on ‘cherry blossoms’ and pasted on the tree in the hallway outside of the Grade 1 classrooms
  • Up next! Break the Rules Day in June when students can break one of five (predetermined and preapproved!) school rules for each non-perishable food donation they bring to school.
Middle and Senior School Round Square students initiated the following activities:

  • Pay to Paint Initiative for Wild ARC.
  • Recycling program support.
  • Charity from Scratch bake sale on- April 13.
  • Talent Show coming up on May 10.
  • Earth Week Speaker for April 17.
  • Clothing Swap on April 26.
  • Honouring the fight against fascism on May 9.
  • Polinator Garden.
  • Up next! Stay tuned for next month’s newsletter where we focus on the Round Square collaboration with the Victoria Foundation’s Vital Youth Program.
There are 7 Learning Outcomes that guide GNS students in their service choices and their reflections.

  • This month we shine the Spotlight on the Learning Outcome – Developing international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism, and intercultural understanding
As students approach this learning outcome they consider how their service actions can have an impact locally, nationally and globally. They also might consider how the actions they take locally can make a difference globally. Some of the ways GNS students reflect on this Learning Outcome are: How can I learn about the needs that exist in other parts of the world? How can I use my language skills to learn about how I can be of service? How can I learn more about the culture of the community I am engaging with so that my actions are respectful?
