Spring is always an interesting time of year in our University Guidance office. Even virtually, it is full of conversations, advising and planning with Grade 12s but also with our upcoming students in Grades 10 and 11. With course requests recently wrapping up, driven by University Guidance research, we have appreciated the opportunity to meet with many GNS families regarding strategic plans for the future in such a meaningful way.

Since our return to classes with GO!, University Guidance has been in full swing supporting Grade 12 students in the final stages of the university admission process. Students have continued to receive support with finalizing personal statements, scholarship applications and sending in any required updated academic information. The post-secondary world was quick to adapt to the new ‘normal’ and provide updates regarding any changes to admission timelines and processes.

Following months of research with an intentional emphasis on fit, the graduating class of 2020 have been presented with exciting opportunities for their future. As a community, we want to celebrate the Grade 12 class and their collective success, as each student has received offers of admission to university or college. The group has earned a total of 253 offers, an average of 3.6 per student, with more expected over the next few weeks. To date, this year’s Grade 12 students have also received $1.2 million ($1,209,598) in scholarship offers.

Ms. Colibaba and Ms. MacMillan want to acknowledge the wonderful effort students put forward this term with their Career Life Connections Capstone presentations. They showed remarkable truth and courage as they discussed their past, present and future plans. Much exceptional knowledge, skills and experiences were shared in everything from Biochemistry extended essays, the importance of bees, extrinsic vs. intrinsic motivation, naloxone training, volleyball tips, bass guitar lessons, singing advice and public speaking guidance, just to name a few.

As the Grade 12s finalize their plans for next year, our office continues to support each student and their families prepare and transition. Please join us in celebrating the successes of the Class of 2020!
