Supporting Community Through Social Distancing

COVID-19 may have changed the way things are done at the moment, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to support the local community, while still maintaining social distancing. This is an important time to support the community in any way possible. The ideas listed below can be used by anyone.

  • Support Local YYJ - A one-stop website to buy gift certificates from your favourite local and independent businesses.
  • Mask a Hero BC - A public resource to connect those who are able to donate personal protective equipment (PPE) supplies to local hospitals across British Columbia.
  • Victoria Women in Need - Creating an up-to-date, comprehensive resource list to meet the needs of the entire community. Services change at a second, so an up to date list is a vital resource to reduce barriers and the risk of harm. Volunteers are needed to help keep the list up to date by finding new resources in the community.
  • Youth 20/20 Can - The Youth 20/20 team has been finding ways to support the community from a distance. The team has been holding virtual planning meetings and brainstorming through their youth2020can Instagram page.
While there are organizations, like those listed above, that many people can help,, support can be given in other ways as well:

  • Create awareness videos to share with your local community, with a focus on safety, hygiene and the importance of social distancing.
  • Write ‘Thank You’ cards for hospital staff to send to the nearest hospital.
  • Tutor your peers through a video call or help younger family members with their school work.
  • Reach out to neighbours and see if they need support –picking up supplies or taking care of their property while adhering to social distancing guidelines.
  • Design chalk art to uplift your community.
Show us ways you are supporting the community. Post a photo or video on social media and hashtag #mygnsStrongerTogether.
