Glenlyon Norfolk School is introducing a new preschool option for the 2021/2022 school year called First Steps. The half-day pilot program will run five days a week and is primarily for three-year-olds. “We wanted to have a three-year-old program because there is a demand. There aren’t very many preschools in the city where children can come every day for three hours,” explained Ms. Jean Bigelow, Junior School Principal. “We thought it would be great to start the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme at the three-year-old level as there is much we can do with students at this age.” In First Steps, young students will learn and play in an environment that embraces a Montessori methodology within the framework of the inquiry-focussed IB Primary Years Programme. Students will work on pre-literacy, numeracy and fine and gross motor skills. “The PYP is a wonderful program that encourages students to ask questions about the world around them. It is about being curious and starts children on the journey of becoming lifelong learners,” said Ms. Bigelow. “I think it stands out because we choose the best of Montessori and combine it with the IB programme of inquiry. I think the Nature School component allows kids to explore the incredible environment in our neighbourhood. Interacting and processing the natural world through play and exploration is an important element of the early learning journey.” Students will have lots of playtime at the beach, with the ocean right in front of them, to complement their classroom learning in the historic Robertson Boathouse.

“We happen to have a great space for it. We have the Nature School component, and students will take French, Music, Art and Physical Education from specialist teachers. It will be a great kickoff to their GNS career,” said Ms. Bigelow. Students will also be able to take advantage of the gym and the beautiful new music centre at the beach.

“First Steps feeds nicely into the rest of the school. It sets kids up for success in becoming curious, interested learners who know how to solve problems and take action with their learning. We are really proud of our school, and now we have the facilities that reflect the quality of the program. It’s a match made in heaven,” said Ms. Bigelow. More information can be found on the Junior Kindergarten page on our website, or contact admissions@mygns.ca to inquire.
