Summer FUN at GNS

Once again, Glenlyon Norfolk School is pleased to be able to offer a variety of Summer FUN at GNS programs to keep students active during the summer break!
Arts, athletics, kayaking, creativity, magic and more—our summer programs offer something for everyone! Half- and full-day options are available as is free extended care where age-appropriate, and all camps and activities are open to both GNS and non-GNS children and families.

The cornerstone of GNS Camps is the excellent leaders, teachers and coaches, all of whom are experienced working with students, certified in First Aid and CPR-C, criminal record checks and vulnerable sector screening. Our leaders combine creative, active and collaborative ideas to deliver a quality program that emphasizes truth, courage, caring, individuality and community. The leader to student ratio is 1:10.

Camp Locations

Our Pemberton Woods Campus is located at 801 Bank Street. The drop off area is accessible from Maddison Street.

Our Beach Drive Campus is located at 1701 Beach Drive. There is street parking adjacent to the campus.

    Chickadee camps are for our youngest campers and feature a different theme each week!

    A different theme each week!
     
    • June 20–24: Curious Minds ($275): "This camp will introduce participants to the importance of cooperation, physical activity, and several STEM activities. This camp is designed for participants to explore and build upon their natural curiosity about how objects work.
    • June 27–30: Amazing Race ($220): Amazing Racers—are you ready? Are you up for the challenge? Campers will experience a week full of challenges and adventures across 5 days in 5 different countries. Campers will be placed on a team for the week and will have to work together to cross the finish line.
    • July 25–29: Act Out ($275): This camp is an introduction to acting. We will focus on improvisation, ensemble building, character development, devised theatre, and intro to script work.
    • August 15–19: Art ($280): Bring out the inner artist in you! One full week of art class. This camp will include using various art techniques such as painting, clay, mixed media and more. We will be incorporating beach and nature exploration to inspire our campers with the world around them.
  • Culinary Camps: Ages 10 to 14

    Each camper will make their own lunch and two snacks every day for the duration of the week. Campers will use personal kitchen utensils and induction stovetops that are provided by GNS.
     
    • June 27 to 30: Chefs will learn how to make everyone's favourite family BBQ dishes such as hot dogs, hamburgers, sausages, kebabs and a variety of side dishes. At the end of the week, our chefs will create their own recipe with mystery ingredients. ($320)
    • August 8 to 12: This week in Culinary Camp we will be focusing on our favourite street foods from tacos, handheld snacks to ice cream. ($395)
    • August 22 to 26: This week in Culinary Camp we will be focusing on our favourite vegetarian dishes. Chefs will learn how to make delicious snacks, treats and mains without using any meat products. ($395)
  • Baking Camps

    Have you ever wanted to learn how to bake delicious snacks and treats? If so, Baking Camp is the camp for you! As a junior baker, you will learn how to bake, use various icing techniques, make no-bake treats and personal size cakes. GNS will supply all kitchen equipment. Each junior baker will have their own kitchen utensils for the duration of camp.
    • July 4 to 8 for ages 10 to 14 ($360)

  • Master Chef Junior: Ages 7 to 9

    This camp is designed for campers who are interested in learning how to cook. Over the course of the camp, our Junior Chefs will be cooking their lunch each day. They will learn proper cutting and food handling techniques. GNS will be supplying each camper with their own kitchen utensils, induction stove top and ingredients.
    • July 25 to 29 for ages 7 to 9 ($350)
  • Sewing Camp: Ages 9 to 12

    Have you ever dreamed of making your own custom clothing article? This hands-on camp is your chance to do exactly that! We welcome sewers of all levels to join us in this week-long session. You will learn how to use a sewing machine, alter a pattern for the right fit and choose the right fabric. The camp will be held in our state of the art Innovation Lab. Our experienced Camp Leader, Kiya, runs a small clothing business with garments made from recycled and repurposed materials. The cost of the camp will cover all needles and thread as well as the cost of fabric. Over the course of the week, you will be working on creating your own bucket hat and tote bag.
    • July 4 to 8 for ages 9 to 12 ($280)
  • Gryphons D&D: Ages 11 to 18

    Storytelling through D&D is a week-long camp where student learn storytelling principles and put them into practice by playing the cooperative role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. Participants will create a new character and, in small groups, play them through an interactive story led by an experienced Dungeon Master. Each session will being with a short lesson on storytelling structure and technique so that participants will learn skills allowing them to run their own games afterwards. Open to beginners and experienced players.

  • Gryphons Art Camp: Ages 12 to 14

    Bring out the inner artist in you! One full week of art class. This camp will include using various art techniques such as painting, clay, mixed media and more. We will be incorporating beach and nature exploration to inspire our campers with the world around them.

  • Girl Power Sports Camp: Ages 8 to 11

    This camp is designed for our girls with a heavy focus on sports. We will be focusing on teaching how to be healthy, active and feeling empowered. Throughout the week our Camp Leaders will lead campers through a variety of mindfulness activities, sports and games.

  • Field Hockey Camp

    • July 18–22 Field Hockey Camp, ages 9-13
    Designed for athletes between 9-13 years old, the training sessions will focus on teaching the technical and tactical style of play. Open to GNS and non-GNS athletes.
  • Kayak Camps

    • Kayak Day Camp for Beginners (ages 10 to 13): July 4 to 8 ($350)
    • Kayak Day Camp for Intermediate (ages 10 to 13): July 4 to 8 ($350)
    • Kayak Day Camp for All Levels (ages 10 to 13): July 18 to 22 ($350)
    • Kayak Day Camp for Intermediate (ages 10 to 13): July 25 to 29 ($350)
    • Kayak Day Camp for Beginners (ages 9 to 11): August 15 to 19 ($350)
    Beginner camps cover all the basics of sea kayaking while exploring many of Victoria's best paddling areas. Intermediate camps allow campers to increases their skills. Land-based games and activities while also be included.
    • Kayak Overnight Camp for Intermediate (ages 15 to 17): July 4 to 8 ($500)
    This five-day camp starts with two days of sea kayak skill progression and team building through a variety of activities on both land and water. A portion of the first two days will also be dedicated to trip preparations. From Wednesday to Friday campers will participate in a two-night sea kayak expedition to Discovery Island Marine Park. Campers will be sleeping in tents provided by GNS while on the expedition. Campers will also be trained in camp stove use as well as other camp craft skills, the expectation is that all campers contribute towards group related tasks at camp. On Thursday we will explore the Discovery/Chatham islands on a day paddle. Throughout the week campers are expected to help with the launching and landing of the kayaks daily. This will involve carrying boats on the beach; the distance will be dependent on tide levels.
  • Startup Skool: Entrepreneurial Camps

    Educating the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
     
    • July 25 to 29: Designed Thinkers for ages 12 to 16 ($450): This program combines the art of entrepreneurship with the beauty of design. Using a combination of tools, methods, and frameworks, students solve real-world problems and build upon existing designs to create more functional and enjoyable products. In just one week, students will create an app that solves a real-world business problem or local issue and present their solutions to a panel of respected industry experts.
    • August 8 to 12: Creative HQ for ages 8 to 11 ($450): The Creative HQ program engages curious students in exploring the fundamentals of starting a real business. Through project-based activities, students will learn all about solving problems, thinking creatively, making products, and how to market their ideas. Students will explore the world of advertising by creating their own videos, building their own products, and meeting with entrepreneurs from the community.
    • August 22 to 26: Innovation for ages 8 to 11 ($450): This week-long Innovation Camp will bring together creative youth to explore the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, basics of coding, web design, and collaborate with like-minded peers and local Victoria entrepreneurs. By the end of the camp, these young innovators will have become Early Entrepreneurs equipped with the knowledge and skills to embark upon their entrepreneurial journey.

  • Q: Is Extended Care available?

    Extended Care is available from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. free of charge to all campers from ages 5 to 10.
  • Q:
    I would like to cancel my child’s registration. What is your refund policy?

    1. Regular Refund Policy: All requests for refunds must be made in writing via email to ssullivan@mygns.ca. Refunds less than a $50 administrative charge per camp, per child, will be issued for all camp cancellations up to two weeks (14 days) before the first day of the camp. GNS reserves the right to cancel a camp due to insufficient enrolment or unavailability of instructors. If this situation arises, camps will be cancelled by 3:30 p.m. one week before the start date and all fees for a cancelled camp will be refunded.
    2. COVID-19 Camp Cancellation Policy: Given the uncertainty of the current situation, full refunds will be provided for registered participants if the school’s Leadership Team (through guidance from Public Health) determines that our camp program is unable to operate due to social distancing requirements or health concerns related to COVID-19.
    3. Sick Child Refund Policy: A camp credit will be applied to participants who miss camp due to being sick or who have symptoms of a common cold, influenza or COVID-19. There will be no tolerance for sick children or staff at camps, therefore, participants must remain home until they have been assessed by their health care provider and it is determined that they do NOT have COVID-19, and their symptoms have resolved.
  • Q: What if I am late to pick-up my child from Extended Care?

    For any child not picked up by the time reflected in their registration, parents will be charged a $25 late pick-up fee per child.

    What is GNS’ Summer Program COVID-19 Action Plan?

    As outlined by the BC Centre for Disease Control and BC Ministry of Health, GNS will follow the COVID-19 Public Health Guidance for Child Care Settings Guidelines to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 and maintain safe and healthy environments for children and staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Q: What will camp participants do each day?

    1. Our priority is to ensure the safety of your child and our community.
    2. Each camp has a designated theme and the specific schedule will be released one week in advance to the camp start date.
    3. Individual, indoor, outdoor or rainy day activities will be facilitated and led by the leader.
    4. Timetable for a typical day:

      8:30 a.m.Drop off of campers. Parents confirm verbally to staff via COVID screening questions stating that their children are healthy. Parents must provide nut free snacks and lunch, water bottles and outdoor clothes. Participants will be playing outside till all campers arrive. **Please note participants cannot be dropped off before 8:30 a.m. unless registered for before camp care.
      8:30 to 10:00 a.m.Individual arts and crafts or activity related to the weekly/ daily theme.
      10:00 to 10:30 a.m.Participants will wash their hands and have their snack.
      10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.Playtime outside or on the beach.
      10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.Playtime outside or on the beach in separate areas.
      12:00 to 12:30 p.m.Staff will wipe tables. Participants will wash their hands before lunch and will have their lunch provided by parents. Participants will wash their hands after lunch.
      12:30 to 3:00 p.m.Outside to play or complete the activity of the day. Wash hands and get ready for pick up.
      3:00 to 3:30 p.m.Staff will escort their group to the playground in front of Gustavson and Gudewill Houses where participants will play outside together until they are picked up by a parent/guardian.

COVID-19 Protocols

Following the guidance of the Public Health Agency of Canada and the provincial health officer, we have developed a COVID-19 action plan with policies and procedures in place to maintain the health and safety of our participants, families and staff. Please be advised that although our camp registration is open, additional precautions may change the camp experience. We are continually reviewing and monitoring the current situation and our camps are subject to change. We appreciate your on-going understanding to keep our community healthy and safe.
