Recently, nine students in our Gryphon House and Family Boarding programs spent a weekend at Mount Washington, where they skied, hiked, and explored the North Island.

There were students with various levels of expertise, as some students grew up skiing in the Alps, while others skied for the first time.

“As we grow our boarding programs, having excursion-style activities that students can sign up for from both Family Boarding and Gryphon House, helps them to see different parts of Vancouver Island they might not normally see,” said Mr. Trevor Mannion, Director of Enrolment. “It gives them those large opportunities to explore the place they are living in that they couldn’t do on their own.”

More experienced skiers were able to ski on their own, while those learning had the opportunity to take some lessons and guidance. Smiles were all around.

Paul Scherer ’24 has been skiing since he was two years old, he grew up skiing in the Alps.

“It was super fun, it was my first time at Mount Washington,” he said, noting this was the first time he had skied in Canada. “It was on my list to go skiing at one point, and this really gave me the opportunity to do that.”

Luise Rau ’24 also went on the skiing trip, this was the first time trying the sport and she said she would want to try it again.

“The trip was amazing,” she said. “I had never really skied before so this was the perfect opportunity to learn. It was great with the Gryphon House students and Family Boarding students to go out and learn together and spend time together.”

What a great adventure to learn new skills and get to know each other better!
