GNS Grad Earns STEM Schulich Leader Scholarship

Congratulations to Eya Ibrahim ’22 who has been awarded a Schulich Leader Scholarship at McGill University, through which she will receive $80,000 in scholarship funding. These scholarships are awarded to 100 high school graduates enrolling in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) undergraduate program at 20 of their partner universities in Canada.

“I was not expecting it at all, but it felt really good when I found out I won the scholarship,” said Eya. “Being recognized in a STEM-orientated field was really empowering and motivating. It made me feel more sure about which field I’m going into in the future and what I want to study.”

At McGill, Eya says she will be studying in the sciences department but has not yet chosen which field.

“I’m learning towards neuroscience,” said Eya. “I know I want to be within the STEM field. I’m very STEM orientated and I find it to be an exciting and innovative field and something I’m really passionate about.”

While the scholarship funding is a help, Eya said she is also excited about the connections she can make by becoming part of the Schulich Leader Network.

“The award also comes along with mentorship opportunities, so I think that’s going to be great,” she said. “Getting some hands-on experience and working in labs with people that are experts in that field—I’m very excited.”

As Eya heads off to McGill in the fall, she said she is looking forward to what the school has to offer as she starts her post-secondary education.

“What I really like about McGill is that they have opportunities that are unique for STEM students,” she explained. “I’m also looking forward to a bigger city—it’s always something you want to look for in a STEM career because it means that you can get some hands-on experience, whether volunteering or working within professional environments. Also, I really love the City of Montreal. I speak French, so it was a natural fit and McGill is bursting with culture. I’m excited to explore the other side of Canada.”
