As part of our fine arts rotation, all Grade 6 students take band for the full year. For many, this is their first opportunity to play a musical instrument. The band program has a long-standing tradition of organizing workshops that the beginning of the school year to provide a solid introduction to playing their chosen instrument. These workshops are important for a variety of reasons:

Building Strong Foundations:

One of the primary objectives of these workshops is to instil fundamental skills, starting with the proper assembly and maintenance of their chosen instruments. Understanding the intricacies of embouchure formation and mastering breath control are essential lessons that pave the way for musical excellence.

Mastering the Basics:

These workshops focus on learning the first five notes that often take centre stage during rehearsals and concerts. Mastery of these notes not only ensures a harmonious ensemble but also instils confidence in our budding musicians.

Professional Guidance:

Professional musicians lead these workshops, offering invaluable expertise. Their keen eyes detect beginner flaws, enabling tailored guidance for each student. This personalized approach ensures that every participant progresses at a pace that suits their individual capabilities.

Fostering Confidence:

Beyond technical skills, these workshops play a significant role in nurturing confidence. By providing students with a platform to monitor their progress, we empower them to take ownership of their musical journey. This newfound self-assurance forms the bedrock of their musical confidence.

Our annual Grade 6 band workshops with professional musicians are more than just introductory sessions; they are the first steps toward a lifelong love of music. By building essential skills, imparting musical knowledge and nurturing confidence in our students, we set them on a path to becoming accomplished musicians. We look forward to witnessing their growth and achievements as they continue to explore the world of music at GNS.
