On June 13, Grade 6 students put the diplomacy skills they have gained this year to use during the annual Model UN day. This year the students were fortunate to have GNS and MUN alumni, Anders Woodruff ’21 and Hannah Yin ’21, act as the Co-Secretary Generals of the conference.
”It feels like not a day has passed since we graduated, I feel very back home,” said Hannah.
“It’s a great excuse to come back and see all the teachers and younger students,” added Anders.
As part of the opening ceremonies, the Grade 6s gathered in Denford Hall for a presentation on the “Overview of refugee emergencies’ by Bradley A. Woodruff, MD MPH. After the presentation, they meet with their committees to begin the work of the conference.
Committee one was the World Health Organization, which discussed global access to clean water. The committee dias team was led by Anders, Sean Shen ’22, Eya Ibrahim ’22 and Mackenzie Heaney ’22. The second committee was UN Women, where they discussed a plan to work toward increasing education rates for girls around the world. The committee dias team included Hannah, Calla Roberts ’22 and Mackenzie Heaney’22.
After a full day of discussion and comprise, students celebrated the end of the conference with a closing ceremony where awards were handed out.
Sarah Kim ’28 was named Best Delegate in the WHO committee, where she represented the country of Niger.
“I think it went pretty good,” she said. “It was really fun. I liked the different committees and how everyone got to represent a different country.”
In the UN Women committee, Aeshan Bandechha, who was representing Canada received Best Delegate. He said he enjoyed the whole day.
“Everybody was nice,” he said. “The older students running it were really kind and they instructed us and told us what to do. It was just a really fun learning experience for me. My favourite part was learning about everything and learning about other countries’ perspectives—it was nice to be in a conversation like that.”
