Last week, I discussed the Vancouver Aquarium. The Vancouver Aquarium is an organization that is trying to protect the oceans and the organisms that live in the sea. In the previous week, I talked about WWF and how they are trying to conserve the forests.

Both organizations work to combat climate change by protecting our forest and oceans so large amounts of carbon dioxide are absorbed from the environment.

This week, I will share the work of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established in 1972. For 50 years, it has been the authority on establishing, implementing and advocating for sustainable development in the global environment.

Its mission is to inspire, encourage and inform nations and peoples on how to live in harmony with their environment while improving quality of life. The United Nations Environment Assembly was established in 2012 to promote the protection of the environment and elevate its importance to that  of peace, poverty, health and security further supporting the important work of UNEP for future generations.

The UNEP supports and advocates for environmental protection through their many campaigns and divides their work into seven thematic areas; climate change, disasters and conflicts, ecosystem management, environment governance, chemicals and waste, resource efficiency and environment under review.

In summary, the Vancouver Aquarium, World Wildlife Fund and United Nations Environment Programme are important organizations that we can support as they work towards protecting our planet by combating climate change through education and raising awareness.

A few things that you can do everyday to help stop climate change is to encourage people to reduce their carbon pollution by biking or walking to school or work, purchasing electric cars, installing solar panels and, when it gets cold, to put on a sweater instead of turning up the heater. You can also turn off lights or appliances when they are not being used, which will not only protect the environment but also save money!

Another way to stop climate change is to eat more plant-based meals. Not only do plant-based diets help reduce chronic illnesses like heart disease, stroke, diabetes and cancer, they can also slow down climate change. These are a few of the many healthy habits we can start that benefit not only us but also the environment.
