Meet the Team: Ms. Carolyn Green, Senior School Principal

Meet the Team
Carolyn Green, Senior School Principal
What made you want to be part of the GNS community?

I wanted to move to the island to be with my husband who has a job in Sidney. As I started looking for a job and found this one, during the interview process, I was so impressed with the people of GNS! The Senior Leadership team who are vibrant, knowledgeable and warm; the Senior School leadership team who are so competent, hardworking and fun; and the students that I spoke to were amazing—so eloquent and engaged. It was all about the people. An IB school and working with Senior School students is very much in my wheelhouse.

How did you choose teaching as the right path for you?

I think that teaching found me! From the moment that my parents gave me a blackboard when I was little—which I would use to teach all of my dolls and stuffies—and then much later, being a TA (teacher assistant) at university where I would be part of a team that taught the Botany labs, I slowly found my place as a teacher. Essentially, I love helping other people thrive, grow personally, and become empowered to do what they want to do. Teaching enables me to do that, as well as through many subjects such as Biology, Math and Business. Working with young people is very energizing and fun!

What are some of your interests outside of school?

I love horse riding, although I have not done it for a few years. As a girl, I rode competitively and even had my own thoroughbred. I did show jumping, dressage, gymkhana, and eventing—if it was on a horse, I did it! Now, I settle for walking my dog on the many beautiful trails around BC and reading mystery and crime novels.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I got my black belt in taekwondo with my two sons when they were still at school. The training that we did together strengthened our relationship, especially the words of encouragement and support that we gave to each other during the final competitions. I also have a forensic science qualification and designed and taught the first High School Forensic Science course in Canada.

What do you like about living and working in Victoria?

Commuting takes so much shorter compared to Vancouver! I no longer have to be in my car for 2.5 hours a day. The weather is much better, with more sun, and the peacefulness of driving sometimes fools me into thinking I’m driving through a rural city. I also love the people! And the farm stalls.

What made you become a teacher, and eventually, a principal?

I wanted to have an impact on more people, not just those students who were in my classes, but a whole school. In essence, now I think of the whole Senior School as being my classroom, and it excites me!

Thank you Ms. Green for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer these questions – and for keeping us safe every morning! We hope you have an amazing school year!
