There were two other choirs that sang Christmas carols, as well as the Reynolds Secondary School Carol Band which played during the public touring of the parliament at Christmas Lights Across Canada. Hot chocolate and cookies were provided at the end of the chilly, outdoor performances.

Choral Director, Ms. Chaval, was really happy the choir was asked to participate in this event.

How did the MS Choir become involved in the Light Up?

The organizers at Parliament asked GNS to sing last year but we were unable to. I asked if we could do it next year, and they agreed. So when I got the call this year, I was pretty excited!

How do you feel about this event?

I think it’s a great event to bring the community together, kick off the holiday season, and celebrate with music. I also think it’s fantastic that it’s a national event that happens in every capital city across Canada and then is broadcasted. It’s a great way to bring the country together during this time of year.

Would you want to do it next year as well?

Yes, I would love for the choir to do it again next year—and perhaps the Senior School Choir could have a turn.

What did you like about it?

I thought it was well organized, it wasn’t too long so we didn’t get too cold outside, and I enjoyed hearing the other choirs sing. The GNS Middle School Choir did a wonderful job—they’ve worked hard on their songs. They were focused on my conducting, had their songs memorized, projected their voices and sang with expression. They sounded great. It’s a great opportunity because they get to be on TV for the whole country to see. I loved the countdown to light up the Parliament—it looks so pretty. And of course, we all loved the hot chocolate and cookies after! Getting to hang out inside the Parliament building and seeing the huge Christmas tree they brought inside was really special.

How did you get started with choir?

I’ve always loved music since I was a kid, and it has been a big part of my family. I started taking piano lessons and that was my first introduction to music at 5 years old. From there, I joined a choir and loved singing. I think singing in a choir is such a great activity, especially in Middle School because it’s accessible to all students (everyone has a voice!) and there’s no barrier of entry. I welcome everyone into the choir at GNS.

How long have you been teaching choir?

I’ve been teaching choir and music for over ten years, but have been the Choral Director of the GNS Choirs for four years.

The Middle School choir greatly enjoyed the event as well, especially the cup of hot chocolate and cookies provided at the end. They performed fantastically and are all excited to do it again next year!
