Middle School raises over $30,000 for the BC Cancer Foundation

The Middle School community raised $30,642 for the BC Cancer Foundation through a haircut/shave fundraiser! Along with funds raised, any hair that was cut off and met the criteria was donated to Wigs for Kids BC. The initiative was led by Grade 8 Young Round Square participants Zoe Carroll, Sean Dallin, Emily MacMillan and Madeleine Anctil who worked for the past month to promote the event as they raised awareness and funds for cancer research.  “Over the last couple of weeks we set up a fundraiser page, talked to school faculty and staff, and people who would be willing to cut or shave their hair if we met our donation goal,” the group said.   Their goal for the fundraiser was $10,000, which they quickly surpassed. One Grade 6 homeform raised $10,000 single handedly. As well, teachers got involved to show their support and had their hair cut or shaved off, including Mr. Damon Henry, Mr. Duncan Brice, Ms. Amanda Chaval, Ms. Megan Coll, Ms. Elaine Kao and Mr. Lance Pimlott, as well as Ms. Kim Waugh and Ms. Jackie Wilson who cut their hair to help kick off the event in late October.  “I was happy a lot of people participated,” said Sean. “I wasn’t expecting that many people.”  This was the third time that the Middle School has raised money through a haircut fundraiser for the BC Cancer Foundation, and they were easily able to beat their record of $18,000.  “Everyone is affected by cancer at some point in their life, whether it’s you or a family member,” said Zoe.  Way to go, Middle School, for raising awareness and funds for the BC Cancer Foundation!
