Round Square Wraps Up Busy Year

Here is just a quick recap of this year’s Round Square accomplishments.

In November, an invasive species removal took place at Cattle Point and Uplands Park. This activity focused on removing the English Ivy, Scotch Broom and Daphne. All of these plants are invasive species that could either cause skin rashes or be poisonous to livestock.

Soon after, Round Square students started to organize a student-only fundraiser for the United Way BC Flood Relief. The fundraiser, also known as the Winter Market, included goodie bags, a raffle, a silent auction, gift cards, and luxurious gift baskets.

After the winter break, Round Square members immediately started making way for new initiatives such as a blood drive in support of the Canadian Blood Services and a Candy Gram Sale, as a way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Even with only a couple days until Spring Break, Senior Round Square students were still busy, handling an “Earth Month Thrifted Fashion Show” and monitoring a donation box with funds that will be going to the Canadian Red Cross Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Round Square has also done bottle drives throughout the year, as they had been found to be highly successful for raising funds but also beneficial for keeping many recyclables from ending up in the landfill.

In May, Round Square and the Environment Club collaborated to create a fun-filled informative Earth month! There were fun activities such as alternate transportation week contests, waste-reduction, and the fan-favourite: the Thrifted Talent Show!

Freezie sales are still continuing! So far, Round Square has raised $1,225 and we are hoping to raise some more for Red Cross Ukraine.

For the upcoming year, there will be no Round Square prefect. Instead, Solomon Yi-Kieran ’23 will provide leadership as our school Advocacy Prefect. For the weekly club meetings, Round Square is hoping to have different individuals take turns at trying their hand at chairing. On behalf of the Round Square, we would like to thank Mira Sobkin ’22 for being such a wonderful Round Square prefect, and for always leading the club with enthusiasm and drive.

We would like to thank Ms. McKerlich and Ms. Thijs for being such wonderful teacher sponsors! All of this would not have been impossible without them, as they helped student organizers work out the logistics behind each of their initiatives. Thank you for such a great year in Round Square!
