On September 14, both new and returning Senior School Round Square members met up for their first meeting of the year in Denford Hall. This meeting was to simply get to know each other and to brainstorm which charities would be supported. Students shared passions about bees, the Mustard Seed, forests, endangered species, BC Children’s Hospital and much more.

Ms. McKerlich, Ms. Thijs and Senor Reeves are the teachers sponsors for  Round Square. This year, they have decided to try something new. Round Square members are encouraged to take leadership and ownership of these initiatives by chairing and directing the meetings. The chair of the meeting will still be supported by these teachers, as well as by the Service Prefect Tallulah Tam ‘23 and the Advocacy Prefect Solomon Yi-Kieran ‘23.

By the second meeting, campaign topics were decided. The three main areas of focus for this term are: humanitarian—both local and international; environmental—focusing on the Ancient Forest Alliance, and finally, local health and social issues.

Ideas for upcoming initiatives and fundraisers included dances, invasive species removals, raising funds to support charities such as the BC Children’s Hospital, and organizing food and sock drives to support the Mustard Seed.

With the variety of campaigns running this year, there is something for everyone who wants to get involved—whether you care about the environment or are passionate about humanitarian efforts. Best of all, there is always room for new members, so if you are interested, come to Denford Hall during activity time on Wednesdays!
