By Sonny Pawar, Technical Director of Soccer A wonderful mix of youth and experienced grads came together to form this years’ Senior Girls Soccer team. Early on, they decided that their goal was to medal at provincials, and their dedication has more than paid off: last weekend, they won first place at the BC Provincial Championships, managing to stay undefeated throughout the tournament. Chloe Korol-Filbey was named MVP of the tournament, while Torri Windle was named to the Commissioners 11 (Award). The girls play a fluid, aggressive, possession-based style of soccer that was the envy of almost every opponent they faced this season. They rarely lost the battle for the ball, demonstrating a very high level of skill. More importantly, they showed their courage by sticking with a decisive style of play that prioritized risk-taking. Overall, the girls showed admirable mental toughness and a never-quit attitude that made them extremely difficult to beat: at Provincials, they let in only one goal over five games!  In addition to claming the title of Provincial Champions, they won first place on the B Side in the UVIC Invitational (which included a 3-0 victory over SMUS), and finished first at the Island Championships in Duncan, BC. A huge congratulations to all these fantastic players! They represented themselves, their school, their community and their city with the type of wonderful sportsmanship that has become synonymous with GNS Athletics. Great work, Gryphons!
