Telling Her Story through Art

Giulia Giommi ’21 is one of two students who will be displaying their pieces at the 2021 IB Art Exhibition from March 3 to 9. Giulia’s art is based on experiences in her life that have shaped who she is today. The show will include eight of her pieces, which are divided into two sections.

“One half is childhood and nostalgia, and positive warm elements. The other is a more dark theme that has to do with death,” she said.

Giulia uses a lot of acrylic paints and watercolor in her pieces and influenced by her life when she gets into the artistic process. She uses her memories to create a flowing piece.

“I tend to think of a main ‘heart statement’ for each of my pieces, then I go off of that for my inspiration,” she said.

One of her favourite pieces in the exhibition is her landscape piece ‘Sweet Memories and Trees.’

“I painted it when I was up in Campbell River with my grandparents,” she said. “I had a fun time painting it and it’s more personal for me because while I was painting it was really relaxing and during the summer, so less stress.”

For those who see the IB Art Exhibition, Giulia wants to take them on a journey with her pieces and hopes spectators will be able to read the story she is putting out there.

“For the way my exhibition is presented I would like people to be taken through a journey and get a feeling for how I view the world and express myself through my art,” she said. “But I also want the audience to self-insert in my pieces.”

Being artistic allows Giulia to have an outlet to express herself with the different mediums, colours and lines.

“There is a lot of freedom to create when it comes to art, and it’s a way for me to personally express myself. There are no limitations of what I can and can’t do. I’ve just always grown up loving art,” she explained.

With art being an important aspect of her life, Giulia is looking to study it in her post-secondary education. After visiting the University Fair last year, she met a person who was from the Alberta University of Arts and was so passionate about art it made an impact on her. She plans to attend AUArts and to pursue a Bachelors in illustration and design.

“I do art all the time, and I try to draw at least once a day because I enjoy it, love doing it and I feel like if I did anything else I wouldn’t be as satisfied,” she added.

Watch for a link to be shared of an online photo gallery of the work of Giulia and her classmate Erica Patrick once the exhibition is underway. Grade 11 and 12 students will be able to view their pieces in the Senior School Learning Commons starting on March 3 at 3:30 p.m., and the rest of the cohorts can visit throughout the week.

“Come to support the small art community in GNS,” said Giulia.
