Top Things to Do in Victoria Over Spring Break

In a March update, the Public Health Officer relaxed restrictions for gatherings and events, where up to 10 people can gather, but only OUTDOORS.

Going for a walk or a hike is always a good choice in Victoria. With the spring weather and the flowers blooming, walks and hikes are very enjoyable, especially if you have your family in tow. To promote strolls along the city’s many scenic locations, the City of Victoria has launched their annual “interactive cherry blossom map.” Have this map on your phone while you explore Victoria, City of Victoria Interactive Cherry Blossom Map.

If cherry blossoms aren’t enough, garden tours are also available for those who don’t suffer from intense spring allergies. Known as the ‘Garden City,’ Victoria has many colourful and extravagant gardens such as the favourite Butchart Gardens, which offers visits during spring break as long as COVID-19 protocols are followed.

Museums are also interesting places to visit during spring break. The Royal BC Museum located at 675 Belleville Street contains BC’s natural and human history and the British Columbia Provincial Archives. A whole different type of museum, Miniature World, was rated ‘Top 3 Places to See in Victoria in 2018,’ so it is worth checking out if you have not already.

Farther north and with specimens that are alive and full of energy, there is the Victoria Butterfly Gardens, which houses thousands of tropical butterflies of up to 70 different species, reptiles, tropical birds and more. In the Cowichan Valley, visit The Raptors for an up-close and unforgettable experience with various species of birds of prey. Barn owls, American kestrels, golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, and, of course, bald eagles are only some of the raptors there.

This year, spring break merges into the Easter long weekend. Easter holidays are often accompanied by chocolate, so some of the best local places to go for chocolate are Chocolats Favoris and Rogers’ Chocolate in downtown Victoria.

Don’t forget, after spring break, the Senior School Round Square will be hosting a bottle drive with funds going to the World Wildlife Fund. The bottle drive will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 17. Only refundable bottles such as plastic bottles and juice boxes will be accepted, so remember to save all the empties that you collected during Spring Break for the bottle drive at GNS!

This year’s spring break will no doubt be better than last year. Taking a walk through the streets of Victoria or visiting museums and wildlife sanctuaries are only a few of the options for spring break activities as Vancouver Island is filled with possibilities!
