Ways to Relax for Busy Students

Summer is the best time of the year for many students. The temperature is warm, the climate balmy, and best of all, no school!

However, it is not quite summer and before it arrives, students have to get through an unseasonably cold start to spring and their final exams and summatives.

GNS Grade 12s have it tough as they are starting their month-long series of IB exams. We are rooting for them and know they will do well as they prove all they have learned over the past two year! Even though Grade 9s, 10s, and 11s do not have to suffer through hours-long rigorous IB exams, we still need to deal with the incoming workload of summatives and much of our time is now dedicated to studying and writing. However, it is still incredibly important to take some time out of each day to meditate and relax!

Sometimes, it is hard to have fun at school without being labelled a procrastinator. That is why there are student clubs! Clubs are educationally justified settings that promote learning in the form of social interactions with other students that share the same passion as you, and are also really fun!

Listed below are a few clubs that meet once a week that prioritize students having fun over all else.

The hugely popular Book and Board Club, led by the kind and funny Ms. Elbert, is the perfect place to relax and have fun with your peers! There is so much to do and something for everyone. The most recent book study was Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie and to wrap up every good novel study, the club watch the 2022 version of the movie directed by Kenneth Branagh.

When members aren’t reading, they are playing board games with their peers.  With a huge variety of games are available—Exploding Kittens, Sleeping Queens, Dutch Blitz, Codename—there is something for everyone. So, if you’re looking for something fun to do on Wednesdays during activity time, come by G204.

On Thursdays during activity time in G204, Ms. Elbert runs the Photo Club where students try their hand at photography, and modeling. Some of the students have taken a keen interest in food photography—this is the only time you can eat your subject if you are unhappy with them or are just hungry! Photo Club is something all student can enjoy, whether you’re keen on photography (the latest project features photojournalism), you just love to model (we’re always in need of models), you enjoy manning the seasonal photo booths, or you just love talking and socializing.

Mondays during activity time, you can join Ms. Sicotte in the artroom for Art Club. Drawing, colouring and doodling are all proven ways to relax and relieve stress. And you don’t have to be Picasso or Monet to join in.

So remember, when school gets a little stressful and you find that you’re always staring at your computer screen filled with black words on a white Google Docs screen, it is important to take a few breaks and getting involved in school clubs is a great way to relax and take some time for yourself.
