Empowering Dreams through Donor-supported Education

As former student Paige Thompson ’18 aptly puts it, “It meant that I could have opportunities to succeed academically that I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise.”

GNS has long been celebrated for its commitment to academic excellence and its dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment, but we wouldn’t be able to do it without our donors.

As the giving season is upon us, we are proud to highlight the experience and insight of a GNS alumnus whose life was transformed by the school’s educational programs and the support of generous donations to the Financial Assistance program.

Future Success

Following graduation from GNS, Paige received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Victoria and is now currently pursuing a Bachelor of Education from the same institution with the goal of becoming a high school music teacher.

What’s more, the school continues to play a role in her musical journey.

“I’m playing in a band with a few other people from GNS who were in my graduation class, and I would not have that musical community as well if it hadn’t been for my musical experience at GNS.”

GNS instils a sense of community and support that lasts well beyond graduation.

A Foundation for Effective Teaching

One of the unique offerings at GNS is its inquiry-based program, which equips students with not just knowledge but also the skills to become effective hands-on learners. “Going through a program that was very inquiry-based makes me a better teacher because it makes me understand what my students are feeling more,” said Paige.

These skills translate into success at the university level, giving GNS alumni a significant advantage. “I did way better in university than most of my peers because I had been taught how to study effectively, as well as having received material and guidance that most people didn’t have,” she explained.

The Power of Financial Assistance and Donors

In Grade 11, Paige received a scholarship for her excellence in music, recognition that furthered her already strong drive. “I probably wouldn’t have applied for the school of music at UVic if I hadn’t received that scholarship.”

The generosity she saw from donors during her high school education experience leaves her with the intention to become a donor, too, when her career is more established. “It really makes you feel that what you’re doing is worth something to somebody, like if a complete stranger is willing to fund my education then I must be worth something.”

Paige expressed that when the school community unites to provide funding for GNS, it results in the enrichment of not only the scholarship program for students, but also the emotional and social fabric in the school’s community.

“You’re getting support from a doctor, a scientist, a writer—you’re getting all of these creative and academic minds together and that’s what enriches the school as well, beyond wealth,” she said. “Students from all different backgrounds are being supported and they’re seeing themselves represented in the support they receive.”

This giving season, let us celebrate the transformative power of education, financial assistance and dedicated donors. The story of this former student serves as a testament to the profound impact that strong education has on the lives of its students, and the cycle of generosity that enables dreams to come true.
