By Elspeth Easton Last week, Sofie Finn Storan and Charlotte Brady travelled to Toronto to participate in the Canadian British Parliamentary debate championships. This National event is one of the most competitive in Canada. Over 100 debaters participated, making Sofie and Charlotte’s amazing results stand out even more. In this bracketed event, where progression is predicated on winning, the two GNS competitors achieved notable success. They debated topics such as Basic National Income and whether or not countries should prohibit their citizens from travel to undemocratic countries who rely on tourism. After 6 competitive rounds they became the only team from BC to break second into Semifinals. While they narrowly missed progressing to finals, their results show their dedication to the sport. As a team they placed 5th overall, while Sofie placed 8th and Charlotte placed 3rd individually (separated by .5 of a point). This exciting result means that the girls have both qualified to attend the Oxford Cup in March at Oxford University in the UK! Furthermore, both Sofie and Charlotte will compete in January for a spot on the National team.
