Congratulations to Shunkichi Yamamoto ’23 for being named to Team BC at the 2022 Junior America’s Cup golf tournament. The tournament will be held from July 31 to August 4 at the Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton, California.

Shunkichi was named to the team based on his results at competitions throughout the past year. While he noted he had a slow start, he started to gain his stride as the year progressed.

“At first I thought it was a mistake,” he said when he found out. “I struggled at the start of the year. I’m happy that this turned it around.”

The 2022 competition will mark the 50th anniversary of the Junior America’s Cup, where past participants include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Fred Couples. There are teams from Canada, the United States and Mexico with subgroups from the different states and provinces.

“I’ve just been playing in local events, my schedule is starting to become very busy,” he said. “I’m leaving tomorrow for the NextGen Pacific Championship hosted at Nanaimo Golf Club.”

As this international competition isn’t until July, Shunkichi will have lots of time to work on his game and continue practicing.

“I try to practice as much as I can beforehand,” he said. “It’s pretty hard with school right now so in the summer I dedicate a lot of time.”

Having been involved in golf for many years, Shunkichi said he likes the variety the sport gives.

“I like that every day isn’t the same—it’s so unpredictable what can happen. You go into one day feeling good, and the next day can be terrible,” he explained.

Good luck Shunkichi!
