Vancouver Island is a photo hotspot, whether you’re somebody who posts photos on Instagram or consider yourself a professional photographer. Victoria is especially beautiful, with its abundant fauna and flora, pebbly beaches, and stunning sunsets. GNS students recognize the beauty of Victoria and to pay homage, every Tuesday in Upper Gudewill photographers—both amateur and professional—gather to share and learn more about the art of photography. Run by Ms. Elbert, Photo Club is a great place to be, whether you just want to pop in from time to time or participate every week. There you can learn about nature photography, portrait-style photography, architectural photography, film, and even the art of Photoshopping. The weeks alternate between “Mission Weeks”—where you take photos around campus to fulfill missions—and weeks where we learn from examples of photos, provided by Photo Club members and famous photographers. Last term, the club hosted a Halloween Photo Booth, photo competitions and members used a popular scavenger app called GooseChase to go on weekly scavenger hunts where winners win chocolate bars! There were also chances to apply and input your photos for photo competitions hosted by Capital Daily for the chance to win gift cards. Past gift cards included those for Ottavio Cafe. The group also provides an opportunity to connect with other photographers at different skill and interest levels, from those who are just interested in taking the occasional photo, to those intent on exploring photography at a more advanced level. Photography doesn’t only happen during Photo Club. The majority of photos are taken outside of school hours, sometimes by a beach or even at sunset. Photo Club gives you the life skills and base knowledge to take beautiful photos for memories, or that important selfie. You don’t need a camera as there are cameras available and phones are welcome. There is something for everyone. If interested, contact Ms. Elbert at jelbert@mygns.ca, or show up on Tuesdays at lunch in G204.
