GNS Students had a big showing at the virtual Canada-Wide Science Fair this year. Taya Lee ’22, Charlotte Quin ’24 and Alexis Kuo ‘24 received awards at the country’s largest annual youth science, technology, engineering and mathematics event.
Taya was awarded the Excellence Award: Gold, Challenge Award: Environment and Climate Change, Canadian Stockholm Junior Water Prize and the Renewable Energy Award for her science project “Recycling oil from contaminated water using Azolla Filiculoides to create a biodiesel blend.” .
“The Canada-Wide Science Fair was an unforgettable experience,” said Taya. “It was exciting to meet and share my project with judges from diverse STEM backgrounds and enthusiastic science students! We used an online platform that made it easy to view all of the amazing projects and participate in different activities.”
Alexis’ project was “Exploring an affordable and sustainable approach to enhance the effectiveness of non-medical masks,” and she received the Excellence Award: Bronze.
“The science fair went really well. The judges were incredibly nice and they asked really fair questions that I never thought of, and it helped me look at my project from a different point of view,” said Alexis. “Even though it was virtual and you couldn’t meet the other participants in person, the science fair did a really good job with creating a social environment. You got to see many cool projects and listen to the creative and entertaining presentations.”
Charlotte, who received the Excellence Award: Bronze for her project on “Growth and feed consumption of chicks supplemented by commercial feed and sunflower sprouts,” also noted the experience was fun and very valuable for her.
“We got to meet people from across Canada, and the students who were working on science projects and presenting them, they were all super interesting…I was astonished, happy and surprised. It does prove that hard work pays off. I spent a lot of time on my science project,” said Charlotte.
